‘We replace toxic chemicals with eco-friendly alternatives when ever possible. For example, we have changed over to wholly biologically decomposable paint for the undersides of a great number of our museum boats. Since the beginning of 2008 we have reduced by ten per cent the total amount of toxic chemical products in our museums. But we can do better.’, comments Kristin Mizser, who is SMM’s eco-coordinator.
One of National Maritime Museums’ activities with a high environmental impact is air travel, used for official business between the museums in Stockholm and Karlskrona. An important eco-goal during 2009 has therefore been to reduce flights by 10 percent. Company cars within the organization have been replaced by eco-friendlier electric or hybrid cars.
Ebbe Ombäck is the environmental auditor for Intertek and is responsible for certifying SMM:
‘National Maritime Museums, under audit, showed an exceptional way to adopt the new eco-friendly mentality and they are well on the way to creating three green museums’, he concludes.
