Welcome to National Maritime Museums

Our charge is the maritime cultural heritage, which affects a great many people. Almost all of us have a relationship with the sea and the special cultural manifestations that are associated in various ways with water. These can be anything from family excursions in that little wooden rowboat to naval activities at sea, a lighthouse-keeper’s tales, or the history of an old warehouse in the harbour.

National Maritime Museums (SMM) works both nationally and internationally with many different actors through our museums – the Vasa Museum, the Naval Museum and the Maritime Museum – to ensure that the maritime cultural heritage is preserved, made accessible and developed. Our vision is to become Europe’s leading strength in this field.

It is an ambitious goal but we are already far advanced in many areas. Research into conservation of the Vasa is already internationally recognised and several pioneering projects are underway. It is our ambition that our museums should always provide the visitor with world-class information, exhibitions and accessibility.
